The archery lottery of Meghalaya โ tradition, rules and how results are decided.
# What is teer
Teer is the Hindi word for arrow, and the game is exactly what the name says: archery, turned into a numbers draw. It comes from the Khasi and Jaintia hills of Meghalaya, where archery is old โ older than any betting counter. Village tournaments with bamboo bows go back generations. Somewhere along the way, somebody started counting the arrows that hit the target and taking the last two digits of the count. A pastime became a draw.
A day at the ground runs like this. Licensed archers line up before a straw target. In the first round, fifty archers shoot thirty arrows each at the target; in the second, twenty each. Officials collect the arrows that lodged in the target, count them, and keep the last two digits. If 1,247 arrows hit, the result is 47. The number goes up on a board at the counter, and the day's business is done. Two rounds, two numbers, every draw day.
Two draws anchor the day for most followers. Shillong's game runs at Polo Ground under the Khasi Hills Archery Sports Association; Khanapara's runs at its counter near Guwahati, on the Assam border. Morning and night sessions fill out the schedule. The afternoon games rest on Sundays.
The legal part is simple and worth stating exactly. Teer is legal in Meghalaya under the Meghalaya Amusements and Betting Tax Act, 1982, which regulates it as a licensed game. Outside Meghalaya, the position changes โ in most Indian states, and in most countries, betting on teer is not legal. Information about results is not the same as permission to play. Check the law where you are.
One thing nobody can do: know the number early. People ask constantly โ is there a leak, a fixed list, an insider? Think about what the number is. It is the last two digits of a live arrow count. One arrow more or less changes everything: 1,084 arrows gives 84, and 1,085 gives 85. Fifty archers, loose bamboo arrows, wind, tired arms โ no insider can fix that count, because the count doesn't exist until the last arrow lands. Anyone selling "confirmed" numbers before the shoot is selling air.
That is the whole game: old bows, a straw target, a count, and two digits. Everything else โ charts, formulas, dream books โ is commentary built on top.
