Every teer number comes from real arrows. At the Khanapara counter near Guwahati — and at Polo Ground in Shillong — licensed archers shoot at a straw target: 30 arrows each in the first round, 20 in the second. Officials count every arrow that lands, and the last two digits of that count are the result. 1,247 arrows means 47. 940 means 40. That's the whole game — and it's why nobody can know the number before the count finishes.

Three steps, no machines, no draws — just archers and arithmetic.
Around fifty licensed archers line up and shoot their quota at a cylindrical straw target — 30 arrows each in the first round, 20 in the second.
Every arrow lodged in the target is counted by hand, in public, at the ground. Say the count comes to 1,247.
The result is the last two digits of the count — 1,247 becomes 47. A count of 940 becomes 40. The number is written up at the counter within minutes.
Because the result is the tail end of a large count, tiny changes flip it completely — 1,084 arrows gives 84, one more arrow gives 85. That's also why "leaked" or "fixed" numbers sold before the announcement are always made up.
What a winning ticket pays. Amounts vary slightly by counter — these are the standard figures.
The teer day runs on a fixed rhythm. In winter the numbers sometimes come a little early, in summer a little late — the exact minute depends on when the count finishes.
